Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Overproof Demerara rum — Lemon Hart 151 traditional
  • 0.5 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz Demerara syrup — Simple syrup acceptable
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Story

I asked for recommendations for Lemon Hart 151 — wanting more than the usual “float on top” application. You suggested the 151 Swizzle first as the purist’s way to experience the rum’s smoky Demerara profile as a primary base. You walked me through the technical case: crushed ice is mechanically necessary at 75.5% ABV, providing both rapid chilling and the dilution that makes the rum drinkable.

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass with crushed ice.
  2. Add all ingredients directly to the glass.
  3. Swizzle with a bar spoon or swizzle stick until the outside of the glass frosts.
  4. Top with additional crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig.

Notes

  • Dilution is the mechanical necessity here given the 75.5% ABV.
  • Demerara syrup is preferred over simple — its molasses depth complements the rum’s character.
