Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Rye whiskey — Bourbon may be substituted
  • 1 oz Cynar — Used in place of sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Aromatic bitters — Angostura suggested

Story

When you said you did not have simple syrup available, the conversation shifted away from the mezcal drink into something entirely bottle-based. The solution was a Black Manhattan-style structure where Cynar replaced sweet vermouth, keeping the drink rich and balanced without requiring citrus or syrup.

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir until thoroughly chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or over a large cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Garnish with a cherry or orange peel.

Notes

    • Both rye whiskey and bourbon were offered as valid bases, so both are represented in the metadata.
