Zombie (1934 Recipe)
The original complex tiki masterpiece featuring a potent blend of three rums, citrus, and a hint of anise.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Gold Puerto Rican rum
- 1.5 oz Dark Jamaican rum
- 1 oz Overproof Demerara rum — Lemon Hart 151 traditional
- 0.75 oz Fresh lime juice
- 0.5 oz Falernum
- 0.5 oz Don's Mix — 2 parts grapefruit juice, 1 part cinnamon syrup
- 1 tsp Grenadine
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 6 drops Pernod — Absinthe may be substituted
Story
While looking for ways to use Lemon Hart 151, we landed on the 1934 Zombie. You suggested it because Lemon Hart is historically the “heart” of Don the Beachcomber’s recipe. It represents the high-water mark of tiki complexity — exactly what I was looking for in an overproof rum application.
Method
- Add all ingredients to a shaker with crushed ice.
- Shake briefly to chill.
- Pour the entire contents (unstrained) into a tall glass or tiki mug.
Notes
- The Pernod/absinthe is used sparingly but is vital for the aromatic finish.
- Don’s Mix is the proprietary ratio Don the Beachcomber used; the cinnamon syrup is where the tropical complexity comes from.
