Italian Monk
A rich, moody Negroni riff using Del Santo to provide coffee and vanilla depth in the absence of traditional sweet vermouth.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz Gin
- 1 oz Aperol
- 0.5 oz Coffee liqueur — Luxardo Del Santo recommended
- 0.5 oz Dry vermouth
Story
After I mentioned I had Del Santo in my cabinet, you suggested this build to solve my lack of sweet vermouth and Campari. You positioned Del Santo as the “anchor,” providing the dark, syrupy weight required for a Negroni profile, balanced by the dryness of the vermouth and the citrus-bitter top note of Aperol.
Method
- Add gin, Aperol, Del Santo, and dry vermouth to a mixing glass.
- Fill with ice and stir for 20–30 seconds.
- Strain over a single large cube in a rocks glass.
- Garnish with an orange twist.
Notes
- Del Santo is much more intense than vermouth; using it at 0.5 oz prevents the sugar from dominating the gin.
