Prompted Pours

Mexican Monk

A deep, honeyed sipping sour that pairs the baking spices of Bénédictine with the dark fruit undertones of Lobos 1707.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Reposado tequila — Lobos 1707 recommended
  • 0.5 oz Bénédictine
  • 0.75 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

Story

You initially suggested this as a rocks drink, but we pivoted to serving it up to emphasize the viscous mouthfeel of the Bénédictine. I asked how the drink would change in a coupe, which led to a refined “over-shake” workflow that provides micro-dilution without the presence of ice.

Method

  1. Combine ingredients in a shaker.
  2. Shake for a full 15 seconds (over-shake) to ensure the heavy liqueur is properly diluted and chilled.
  3. Fine-strain into a chilled coupe.
  4. Express the oils of a lime peel over the surface and discard.

Notes

  • Serving up makes it significantly more aromatic and intense than the rocks version — the trade-off is rapid warming, so drink it cold.
