Monte Cassino (Strega Adjustment)
A recalibrated modern classic that uses high-proof rye to tame the intense saffron sweetness of Strega.
Ingredients
- 1 oz Rye whiskey — Willett Family Estate 4-Year — increased from standard ratio for structure
- 0.75 oz Bénédictine
- 0.75 oz Fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz Strega — Reduced from equal-parts to balance sugar content
Story
We landed on this build after discussing whether Strega could replace Yellow Chartreuse in my favored Monte Cassino. Strega’s higher sugar content risked making the drink cloying. You asked if a specific rye choice could fix the balance — we chose the Willett 4-Year from my shelf and moved away from equal parts to a 4:3:3:2 ratio to keep the spice and acid in the lead.
Method
- Add the rye, Bénédictine, lemon juice, and Strega to a shaker.
- Shake very hard with large ice cubes to ensure proper aeration and dilution.
- Strain into a chilled coupe.
- Express a lemon twist over the surface and drop it in.
Notes
- Sibling to the original Monte Cassino in the catalog (gin-based, equal parts) — same name family, different base spirit and ratios.
- Willett’s floral/pine notes are a specific flavor bridge to Strega’s minty profile.
