A spicy, high-proof riff on the Last Word that swaps gin for rye and uses Luxardo Del Santo as a savory herbal anchor.

Ingredients

  • 0.75 oz Rye whiskey — Willett Family Estate 4-Year recommended — cask strength keeps the liqueurs from getting syrupy
  • 0.75 oz Coffee liqueur — Luxardo Del Santo recommended
  • 0.75 oz Maraschino liqueur — Luxardo
  • 0.75 oz Fresh lemon juice

Story

This drink emerged while we were looking for a home for Luxardo Del Santo. After identifying Del Santo as a viable Green Chartreuse alternative, you suggested the Final Ward as a natural fit for my Willett 4-Year. We landed on it specifically because the Willett’s high proof and minty profile provide the structural bite needed to balance the lower-ABV, savory nature of the Del Santo.

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with plenty of ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for ~15 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Double strain into a chilled coupe.

Notes

  • If the drink feels too savory, a dash of orange bitters provides a bright citrus lift.
